Capital Dining, the third edition!

It’s coming. It’s coming. I’m closing in on being able to imagine the end! At least of the research phase of the book. Two lunches and a dinner every day takes a toll, but for you, I munch on. This for a third edition of Capital Dining, a guide to recommended restaurants in the Canadian Capital Region. If all goes according to plan, the fully updated guide will be on bookshelves by early November.

Four Cuisines Bistro closed

Number out of service has a gloomy ring. I’ll drive by later today to confirm, but preliminary forays reveal this eclectic little restaurant with the remarkably kind prices has closed.

Whalesbone Oyster House

Bear in mind, as you read the review of the Whalesbone in CD on page 190, that chef Steve Vardy is no longer in charge. Vardy moved to Newfoundland in 2007 (though has returned to open the latest installment of the Black Cat Cafe, on Preston Street – stay tuned). Vardy’s young sous chef at Whalesbone, Steve Wall, is in charge of the fish now, and you will find a report on Wall at Whalesbone under the Review category of this site.

Social stands, but Mitton is gone to Murray Street (see review, August 31/08) which makes the page 157 report, as it stands, moot-ish. Restaurant e18hteen chef Matt Carmichael is now managing both kitchens.

The Courtyard Restaurant

Review of The Courtyard as it appears in Capital Dining, on page 175, speaks mostly about the cuisine of chef Marc Lepine. He left shortly after the book went to print, and is now in the frantic floes of opening his new restaurant, Atelier, on Rochester Street, in the space where Chaba Thai used to be. The new chef at The Courtyard is Michael Hay. Report to follow.

A’roma Meze

Terra Grill

Closed. Then became Austin City Grill – never tried. That closed and this Barrhaven restaurant space is now filled by a Johnny Canuck’s. Tear out page 198.

Cumin and Goan

Perth loses The Hungry Planet

After 12 years, chef/owner Judy Dempsey has hung up her apron and closed the big doors of her wonderful restaurant. She is looking for a change. We wish her well.

Azteca seems to be gone
