Does the professional restaurant critic matter?

In reaction to the Ottawa Citizen parting company with my weekly column of twenty years, Restaurateur Stephen Beckta (Beckta, Play) and blogger Don Chow (foodiePrints) were interviewed on CBC Radio’s All in a Day program, about the future of the professional restaurant reviewer and whether there was still room in the big modern stockpot for that ol’ dinosaur. I am grateful to them both for their kind words.

If you’d care to listen, you’ll find the interview here.

Hi Anne. I’ve been working in Montreal for the last two weeks and got home last night. I always look forward to the Thursday Citizen because of your column. This morning, my black lab Jake, carried in our paper and… Whoa! Where’s Anne? My wife then told me the bad news. We wish you well and will now check in on-line to see what you’ve been up to. Thank you for the years of entertaining and honest reviews. Joe McGrath and Maureen McLaughlin.

Built up a trust with the diners, restauranteurs and chefs…. I believe that says it all.

I can ask my buddies what they think, there is value in that of course.

I can go to a source that has been (for me) consistent, invaluable.

I love reading about people talking about food, i visit all of the local sites and really enjoy it. When I read you Anne, it is a different experience which guides me – due to the trust.

Thank you, Anne, for continuing your reviews online. We have been relying on you for a long time to steer us to new and interesting places to eat in the capital area. It is a pleasure to read your reviews. Carry on!

    Cheers,
